Export Office venture 'set to amplify Northern talent'

A new initiative is set to propel Northern musicians onto the world stage.

The Northern Music Export Office, backed by Tees Valley Combined Authority, the North East Combined Authority and Liverpool City Region Combined Authority, will offer national and international touring grants, mentorship, export training and showcase opportunities to help artists and music businesses break into global markets.

Announced at South by Southwest (SXSW) in Austin, Texas, officials say it aims to strengthen the North’s music sector by fostering connections with key international music networks and boosting the region’s presence in the industry.

Mick Ross, Generator NE chief executive, said: “Music is an essential part of the North’s cultural identity, and we are thrilled to see this initiative developed.

“The Northern Music Export Office will provide invaluable support to our artists, helping them access international markets, grow their careers and showcase their talent to the world.”

The announcement comes after artists from across the North, including North East singer-songwriters Cortney Dixon, Amelia Coburn and Finn Forster, were part of a delegation promoting the Northern creative industries at SXSW.

North East mayor Kim McGuinness added: “I want to see a new generation of homegrown talent find its place on the world stage.

“We have so many great young musicians in our region, and this new Export Office builds on our success in bringing the MOBO awards to Newcastle and attracting a major label recording studio to the region, opening the door to real opportunities for them.”
