Housing scheme helps tackle homelessness crisis
A Gateshead housing project has launched to address a homelessness crisis.
The 20-supportive home development, led by Tyne Housing in collaboration with Gateshead Council, will provide 17 one-bedroom flats for individuals with support needs.
It will also include three dedicated ‘moving on’ flats for people ready to make the transition to live more independently and move towards work.
Located in Pelaw, officials say the scheme is for people aged 25 and over, referred from Gateshead Council, offering round-the-clock safety and support.
They add the service will create ten jobs.
Steve McKinlay, Tyne Housing chief executive, said: “The UK is witnessing a homelessness crisis that must be addressed on both a national and local level.
“By partnering with Gateshead Council to deliver this exemplar scheme, we can start to help people address issues in a place of safety and stability, and at a community level.
“We’re laying the groundwork for lasting positive change, which is exciting to see.”
Councillor Chris Buckley, Gateshead Council’s cabinet member for housing, added: “Sadly, there is still a homeless crisis in the UK, despite it being 2024, and with more people struggling with the rising cost of living, this number is increasing.
“That is why it is really important we work with our communities and housing specialists like Tyne Housing, to ensure we have suitable accommodation for those that need it most.
“Schemes like this help people to be able to get back on their feet and change their futures for the better.”
Funded with £3.5 million from Homes England and the Ministry for Housing, Communities and Local Government’s Single Homeless Accommodation Programme, the project is expected to be completed by spring 2026.
