Pupils cook up Michelin magic with Hjem
A unique collaboration between Newcastle High School for Girls (NHSG) and Michelin-starred Restaurant Hjem saw pupils take part in an exclusive culinary event.
As part of the school’s 150th Anniversary Bursary Appeal, students moving into Level 3 Food Science and Nutrition next year supported the Hjem team, gaining insight into high-end hospitality operations.
The event featured a four-course tasting menu crafted by Hjem’s co-owners, Ally Thompson-Nietosvuori, an NHSG alumna, alongside her husband and head chef Alex Nietosvuori.
Ally, who recently announced that they would close Restaurant Hjem at the end of the year, as the couple prepare to launch Restaurant Freyja at Close House Estate, in Wylam, said: “The girls that helped out on the night were fantastic, and their confidence and happy demeanours made training and working with them a real pleasure.
“They threw themselves into the opportunity with such enthusiasm and were such great fun.
“They reminded me of my time at school, and how lucky I was to attend a school that gave me the opportunities I was afforded, and all in a caring and fun environment.”
NHSG pupil Isabel Barnett added: “Working alongside the Restaurant Hjem was a wonderful experience.
“I am very grateful I got chosen for this as it will really help me when I am doing Food and Nutrition A-Level.
“The staff were amazing at showing us what it would be like working in a Michelin star restaurant and the high standards Hjem holds for their staff.”
With a focus on Northumbrian ingredients and Scandinavian techniques, the evening raised funds to support NHSG’s accessible bursary scheme, offering access to outstanding educational opportunities for girls, regardless of financial background.
