Bridge restoration marks one-year milestone
A major restoration project to refurbish the iconic Tyne Bridge “to its former glory” has reached the one-year mark, with work progressing well toward its 2028 completion.
Led by Esh Construction on behalf of Newcastle and Gateshead councils, the multi-million-pound project is on track for completion ahead of the bridge’s centenary.
Work began in April 2024, with the Gateshead tower already restored and the Newcastle tower now undergoing similar repairs.
Councillor Karen Kilgour, leader of Newcastle City Council, said: “We’re incredibly proud to be restoring our iconic Tyne Bridge.
“We know how much the Tyne Bridge means to everyone in the region, so it’s great to have this first year under our belt and people can see for themselves the difference it is making.
In total, over 1200 repairs will be made, including structural interventions and painting, with 84ft of scaffolding under the bridge now fully installed.
The restoration not only focuses on the bridge itself but also contributes to the local economy, with £22.8 million forecasted to be spent in the North East through apprenticeships, work experience and STEM initiatives.
Councillor Martin Gannon, leader of Gateshead Council, added: “It’s wonderful to see the completed section of steelwork up above Hillgate, now repaired and repainted.
“This is a project we can all take great pride in – both for the engineering expertise and hard work going into the restoration, and for the positive impact the project has on our communities.
“We look forward to further achievements – and the day of completion ready for the centenary.”
Andy Radcliffe, chief executive of Esh Construction, added: “The first restored section of the bridge on the Gateshead quayside offers a glimpse into what this project will deliver for the region.
“Alongside the construction, we have made strides in the first year to create a legacy within the community, from making the bridge’s rich history accessible to the deaf community with a bespoke virtual reality programme, to delivering meaningful work placements for those looking to take their first steps into the industry.
“This project is poised to deliver a real and lasting impact for years to come.”
