North East pupils reach for the stars
A North East education partnership gave young people an out-of-this-world introduction to aerospace careers through an inspiring space-themed event in Newcastle.
More than 160 pupils from regional schools took part in the event at Newcastle University’s Stephenson Building, delivered in collaboration with the North East STEM Foundation (NESF) and Airbus Defence and Space.
The day featured hands-on activities, satellite-building sessions and talks from industry leaders.
Students explored cutting-edge technologies and heard from Jim Christensen, former chief innovation officer at the Aldrin Family Foundation, who was previously education director at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center.
As part of the day, the university also introduced its Aerospace Engineering degree, showcasing career paths in sustainable aircraft and satellite development.
Laura Jones, student recruitment and outreach manager at Newcastle University, said: "We’re proud to welcome young people into our facilities to engage with the latest in space innovation.
“This event not only highlights the breadth of career paths available in the space industry but also supports our goal to inspire the next generation of engineers, scientists, and problem solvers.”
Paul Russell, head of Geospatial Business UK at Airbus Defence and Space, added: “Airbus Defence and Space actively supports the growing North East space ecosystem through its 'Community for Space Prosperity' initiative, which aims to connect and grow the UK space sector.
“Our Geospatial Business here in Newcastle is committed to inspiring the next generation of space enthusiasts through our education outreach programmes and promote the opportunities available to young people within the space industry.”
The event supports NESF’s goal to open up access to STEM and inspire future talent in the North East’s growing tech and engineering sectors.
Tania Cooper MBE, chair of the NESF, added: "This event represents everything the NESF stands for providing students from all backgrounds with access to world-class STEM opportunities and a clear view into the exciting careers available in sectors like aerospace and space technology.”
