Future Ready scheme helps young talent thrive
A Northumberland youth programme has helped more than 100 socially isolated young people build skills and confidence through a creative employability scheme.
Delivered by theatre, drama and creative learning charity Mortal Fools, the year-long CONNECT: Future Ready pilot was supported by the North East Combined Authority and the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.
Developed in response to the lasting effects of the pandemic and youth mental health crisis, the programme offers a person-centred alternative to traditional CV-based interventions.
In total, 111 young people aged 16 to 25 took part in intensive workshops, creative masterclasses and confidence-boosting sessions.
More than 50 joined five in-depth interventions, while 31 completed three-week courses and earned Bronze Arts Awards.
Kiz Crosbie, chief executive and artistic director at Mortal Fools, said: “Our dynamic, high impact employability programmes empower young people with the skills, confidence and knowledge to progress on their professional development journey.
“This work supports regional and hyperlocal economic strategies by moving individuals closer to workforce readiness.
“We are excited for the next stages of our fruitful partnership with Northumberland College, expanding our portfolio of partners working in employability contexts and securing vital funds to support the expansion of this work."
The scheme established partnerships with Northumberland College, NCEA Dukes Sixth Form and regional organisations including Groundwork North East, Kings Trust, Newcastle United Foundation, Northumberland Employability Network and Pride Action North East.
Ziarlotte Gray-Johnson, skills development coach (work placements) at Northumberland College, added: “Mortal Fools treat each and every young person as an individual and they really take the time to listen to them.
“Many of my students felt out of their comfort zone, but with the support of the wonderful staff they really came out of their shell and built their confidence.”
Following the pilot’s success, CONNECT: Future Ready is now a commissionable programme, with Mortal Fools actively fundraising to support its continuation.
