North East firms unite for STEM challenge
A North East furniture manufacturer is helping thousands of school pupils discover the excitement of STEM through hands-on design and creativity.
Ambic Manufacturing, based in Chester-le-Street, launched its annual Ambic STEM Challenge in 2022 to encourage students to design an original piece of educational furniture, with the winning concept built by the firm and delivered to the school.
Last year’s challenge saw over 5000 young people take part, with the 2025 edition set to grow even further with over 70 schools registered.
All finalist schools are awarded a fully funded STEM Day, delivered by the Ambic STEM Challenge Team 2025, offering a hands-on, immersive experience to spark curiosity and build confidence in STEM subjects.
The initiative has grown into a region-wide STEM movement, supported by a coalition of North East companies including Plastic Furniture Company, Ford Aerospace, Solid Solutions, Responsive Engineering, HBG Recruitment, Manosun, TVG (Team Valley Group), Spitfire, IMH, CG Joinery and Building, and House of Stitch.
Liam Hunt, managing director of Ambic Manufacturing, who was the brainchild of the initiative, said, “All of us at Ambic are absolutely thrilled to see so many amazing North East businesses come together to support the Ambic STEM Challenge.
“It’s inspiring to watch this free initiative grow year on year.
“We’re passionate about igniting young minds, and with the support of our partners, we’re making that dream a reality.
“As a manufacturer, it’s exciting to show young people just how many possibilities exist in our industry.
“We want to bridge the gap between education and industry and give students a chance to see their creativity turned into something real.
“That kind of experience can spark a lifelong passion.”
