Building futures with skills partnership

A North East partnership is set to boost construction careers.

Taylor Wimpey North East, one of the UK’s largest housebuilders, has joined forces with Gateshead College to tackle skills shortages in construction.

Officials say the collaboration offers students practical experience and industry insights through workshops and presentations from Taylor Wimpey’s production team, with courses such as bricklaying, joinery and plumbing benefiting from this approach to better prepare students for their future careers.

They add that the partnership also opens pathways to apprenticeships, linking classroom learning directly to job opportunities.

John Deary, assistant principal for construction at Gateshead College, said: “We’re delighted to partner with Taylor Wimpey North East.

“Our focus has always been on equipping our students with skills that employers need and this partnership is a fantastic opportunity for our students to gain direct insight into the modern-day demands of the construction industry.”

David Abercrombie, technical director and chair of the Young Persons Forum at Taylor Wimpey North East, added: “This partnership is a great example of how we’re committed to building strong relationships within our community and giving back in a meaningful and impactful way.

“We don’t just build homes; we aim to build futures by creating employment pathways and supporting social mobility within the North East.

“Working closely with Gateshead College, their teaching staff and students, allows us to help shape the next generation of skilled professionals who will contribute positively to our local economy and communities.”
