Mural marks town’s 800th anniversary

A new mural has helped transform a town centre street in North Tyneside.

Adderstone Foundation and Karbon Homes have funded a large-scale public mural on Norfolk Street, in North Shields, celebrating the town’s 800th anniversary.

Completed by Dutch muralist Nina Valkhoff, the vibrant artwork now brightens the side of the Wooden Deli coffee shop, close to Karbon Homes’ affordable housing scheme Laurel Cove, which is being delivered by Adderstone Living.

Part of the Elevation initiative, the project aims to revitalise public spaces through art, boosting footfall, community pride and wellbeing.

Nina’s design brings a locally chosen nature theme to life, reflecting both the area’s wildlife and the energy of North Shields’ ongoing regeneration.

Jessica Alexander, social value coordinator at Karbon Homes, said: “Art plays an important role in not only brightening up communities but helping to tell their unique stories.

“When we heard about the Elevation public art initiative and saw there was an opportunity to bring a piece of art to a gable end so close to the new homes we’re building, it was a no brainer.

“It’s been great to see Adderstone get behind this project with us.

“We’re proud to work with colleagues who share our commitment to supporting local communities.”

Funding came from the Adderstone Foundation and Karbon’s Unlocking Social Value programme, which matches social value pledges from contractors with community-led initiatives.

Stephen McCoy, director of Adderstone Living, added: “Our affordable housing development at Laurel Cove is not just about building houses but also about helping to create a place where people really feel at home.

“This mural project reflects our commitment to supporting the area’s ongoing growth, and we're looking forward to seeing the positive impact it will have.

"It’s a real pleasure to be involved in this project with Karbon Homes – it’s an excellent way to celebrate the character and identity of the local community.”
