Sustainability on display at Discovery Museum
A science and local history museum in Newcastle is strengthening its sustainability efforts through a new partnership.
Discovery Museum, which is based in Blandford House and is part of North East Museums, has teamed up with Marka, the UK’s first sustainability accreditation for hospitality and venues, to assess and improve its environmental and social impact.
Bosses say the partnership supports the museum’s ongoing work to embed sustainability across hospitality, retail and venue hire operations, as well as reduce carbon emissions.
They add the collaboration represents Marka’s first move into the cultural sector, demonstrating how sustainability standards can be applied in museums and public attractions.
Hugh Stolliday, commercial manager at North East Museums, said: “Marka is a really good fit for us.
“It’s simple to use, but also thorough.
“It’s not just a box-ticking exercise, it helps us make meaningful changes and gives us confidence in what we’re delivering.
“The fact it’s North East-based makes it even more relevant.”
Rob Bowey, director at Marka, added: “Cultural venues like the Discovery Museum are in a great position to lead by example.
“Sustainability isn’t just about the environment, it’s also about social impact, inclusion and cultural relevance.
“We’re proud to be working together to support progress on all fronts.”
Already connected to district heating and undergoing lighting and glazing upgrades, the Discovery Museum will now use Marka’s UN-aligned framework to evaluate progress across areas like energy use, waste, water, accessibility and community outreach.
