VELUX opens window of change with training hub
A roof window maker has joined forces with an education provider to launch a training hub.
VELUX is working with Sunderland College on the VELUX Skills Academy.
Bosses say the base will help “address the UK’s critical shortage of skilled window installers and tradespeople”.
Based in the Sunderland College-managed Housing Innovation and Construction Skills Academy, they add the hub will deliver training across roofing, window installation and smart home technologies, and support new and existing construction sector personnel.
Richard Williams, VELUX UK and Ireland senior architectural development manager, said: “We’re proud to be launching the academy in partnership with Sunderland College.
“This reflects our ongoing commitment to addressing the UK’s construction skills gaps and preparing the next generation of tradespeople to deliver energy-efficient, high-quality homes that promote healthier, more sustainable living environments.”
Ellen Thinnesen, chief executive at Education Partnership North East, which includes Sunderland College, added: “Our Housing Innovation and Construction Skills Academy is blazing a new and innovative approach to skills training in the UK.
“The VELUX Skills Academy will join a dynamic ecosystem of on-site education and industry partners, including the Gentoo Trades Academy and Northumbria University’s Construction Clinic, with more to be announced soon.”
The Housing Innovation and Construction Skills Academy is led by Sunderland College alongside Sunderland City Council, with further backing from Homes England, the Ministry for Housing, Communities and Local Government, Northumbria University, Gentoo, Bishop Chadwick Catholic Education Trust and the Ministry of Building Innovation and Education.
Set to begin teaching in the forthcoming academic year, officials say it will provide training in modern construction techniques, low-carbon technologies and sustainable building practices.
