Council submits 100-home plan for ex-mining village
Plans have been submitted for more than 100 homes in a former mining village.
Durham County Council hopes to build affordable and market housing and bungalows in Horden.
Bosses say the blueprint – which includes two, three and four-bedroom properties – represents a “big step” in £10.7 million plans to transform the East Durham village’s Third Street and Fifth Street, and revive its former Fourth Street.
The proposals include a full planning application for 53 homes and an outline application for up to 52 further dwellings.
The affordable properties would be owned and managed by Durham County Council.
The plans come after the North East Combined Authority approved almost £4.5 million support from its Brownfield Housing Fund and Durham County Council committed to spending £6.2 million to deliver the Horden Masterplan, which officials say could include a new care home, shops and business space.
Councillor Joe Quinn, Durham County Council cabinet member for resources, investments and assets, said: “These plans will – if approved – be a big step toward the regeneration of Horden and The Numbered Streets.
“We hope they will kickstart further regeneration activity in the town and help us attract inward investment in the community.
“We are committed to ensuring the provision of high-quality affordable and market housing across the county that would provide vital homes for local people.”
