Employer scheme in 300 target after century mark

A mayoral-led employer accreditation scheme is aiming to triple membership after reaching the century mark.

Shine hopes to secure 300 North East businesses by the end of the year.

Launched by North East mayor Kim McGuinness, the venture helps employers improve working conditions, promote inclusivity and boost employee wellbeing.

Bosses unveiled the 300 target after new members, including Metrocentre, O’Brien Storage, Husqvarna, Education Partnership North East and Creo Comms, pushed participating firms beyond the 100 barrier in just two months.

Providing access to guidance and exclusive events, Shine covers areas including employee health, safety and wellbeing; community impact and sustainability; employee representation; inclusivity and upskilling; and fair pay.

Mayor McGuinness said: “Our mission is to make the North East the home of real opportunity, and a big part of that is making sure this is a great place to work.

“I’m really excited we’ve already got more than 100 employers signed up.

“We are really ambitious with the programme, and want to see 300 taking part by the end of the year, which could positively benefit more than 100,000 employees across the North East.”

Gavin Prior, Metrocentre centre director, added: “Achieving Shine accreditation is a proud moment, as it reflects our core values and complements the progress we are making with our recent Investors in People Silver accreditation.

“Shine underlines our commitment to respect and fairness – principles that shape how we operate and support our people.”
