Magpies name new chief executive

A football club has confirmed a senior leadership change.

Newcastle United has appointed David Hopkinson as chief executive, with the experienced sports executive officially joining the club tomorrow (September 5).

He will take over from Darren Eales, who is stepping down for health reasons after three years in the role.

David brings more than 25 years' experience across major global sporting organisations.

Most recently, he was president and chief operating officer at Madison Square Garden Sports, in New York, overseeing operations for the Knicks and Rangers.

His career has also included senior roles at Real Madrid, where he served on the executive team as global head of partnerships, as well as at Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment, where he led commercial activities for the Toronto Maple Leafs and Toronto Raptors.

David said: “I am incredibly honoured to join Newcastle United at such an exciting time in the club's history.

“This club represents something truly special.

“It has extraordinary history and heritage, incredibly passionate supporters and ownership, players and staff who are committed to excellence.

“Having worked with iconic teams across different countries, I understand what it takes to build sustainable success at the highest levels of global sport.

“I greatly admire what has been achieved by the club so far, and I am excited and motivated by what is ahead as we strive to position Newcastle United among the world's elite clubs.”

Newcastle United chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan added: “We are delighted to welcome David to Newcastle United.

“David is an outstanding executive whose track record across global sport and entertainment speaks for itself.

“His experience and strategic capabilities will be invaluable as we continue to build on the club's presence locally and grow it globally on and off the pitch.

“David’s leadership will be critical as we build upon what we have already achieved since the acquisition towards an exciting future and sustainable success.”

Director Jamie Reuben added: “David’s arrival as chief executive comes at a crucial time for the club and I am confident that he will prove to be an excellent fit for the role.

“He brings a wealth of experience in leadership positions at some of the biggest names in world sport, with an incredibly strong foundation to build upon.”

David takes over from Darren, who joined the club in August 2022 and has been a pivotal figure in the club’s resurgence.

His tenure has seen significant progress both on and off the pitch, including UEFA Champions League qualification in two of the last three years and a historic domestic trophy win back in March, when the club lifted the Carabao Cup.

The club also recently posted record revenue figures, with a rise of 28 per cent to £320.3 million, providing the platform for continued success.

Darren, who will remain in post for a full handover before officially departing, added: “On behalf of my family and I, I want to extend my sincere thanks to everyone connected to this special football club for welcoming us into the Newcastle United family.

“To all supporters, staff, players, coaches and ownership, you have made my three years here so incredible and I’m immensely proud of what we have achieved together.

“I have made memories that will stay with me forever, and I’m also excited about what the future holds and the successes the club can go on to achieve.”

Yasir Al-Rumayyan added: “I would like to personally thank Darren Eales for his exceptional work and leadership, as well as his friendship, over the last three years.”
