Atom begins ‘new chapter’ at Pattern Shop
A digital lender has opened a new headquarters in Newcastle.
Atom bank has officially relocated from Durham to the historic Pattern Shop.
The move brings nearly 600 employees to the city and supports the creation of almost 30 new roles across engineering, data, operations and customer support.
Bosses say the relocation and multi-million-pound investment reflects Atom’s rapid growth, hybrid working model and future vision, providing a hub for innovation and collaboration.
They add the move reinforces the lender’s commitment to the North East and to developing local talent through initiatives such as its early careers programme and the Atom Graduate Scheme to nurture future leaders and provide opportunities.
Mark Mullen, chief executive of Atom bank, said: “Our move to the Pattern Shop isn't just a change of address; it's a bold statement about our future and our belief in the North East.
“We're investing in a space that celebrates our region's industrial past while providing a modern, flexible, and inspiring home for our people.
“This new chapter will help us attract top talent and continue to challenge the status quo, proving that a truly innovative and profitable business can thrive right here in the North East.”
The Pattern Shop, a Grade II-listed building dating back to the 1880s, is steeped in Newcastle industrial heritage, being once where Robert Stephenson’s built steam locomotives for global export.
The site has been transformed into a low-carbon, sustainable workspace that blends its historic character with Atom’s technology-driven ethos, offering a collaborative environment for its workforce.
Councillor Karen Kilgour, leader of Newcastle City Council, added: “The announcement of Atom Bank’s arrival to the lovingly restored Pattern Shop was hugely welcome news and it’s fantastic to see their move is now coming to fruition.
“This is hundreds of well-paying jobs being brought right into the heart of our city, on a site steeped in history and heritage with an exciting new chapter ahead of it.
“It’s brilliant to see a company rooted to the North East thriving with its expansion into Newcastle, bringing jobs, growth and opportunity to our city and our communities.”
