North East firms shine at national business awards

Two North East companies have been recognised for their innovation and workplace excellence at a prestigious national awards event.

Stockton-based streetlight testing firm Southern Asset Management and Newcastle, Darlington and Leeds-based law firm Square One Law have both been named among just five national winners at the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) Business Awards 2025.

Southern Asset Management secured the Digital Revolution award for its innovative use of technology to drive growth and operational efficiency.

Julie Burniston, head of communications and business development at Southern Asset Management, which last year secured funding to create new jobs and expand into the onshore wind turbine testing and rail sectors, said: “Southern Asset Management are over the moon to win the Digital Revolution Award.

“Our SAM Asset Management Portal, developed under the vision and leadership of our chief executive Steve Southern, is transforming how we serve clients, and this incredible recognition will help propel us from Teesside to the national stage and beyond.

“We’re so proud to be flying the flag for the North East and showcasing the innovation that’s driving growth across our region.”

Meanwhile, Square One Law was celebrated in the People and Work category for its dedication to developing talent and fostering an inclusive workplace culture.

Gill Hunter, managing partner at Square One Law, added: “We’re absolutely delighted to have been recognised nationally with the People and Work Award.

“As a values-driven and inclusive firm, this recognition reflects our commitment to fairness, integrity, and the courage to do the right thing.

“Our brilliant team brings our culture to life every day, creating an environment where everyone can thrive and be themselves.

“Together, we’ve turned our values into meaningful action, delivering demonstrable results for our clients and wider networks.”

The awards highlight the region’s thriving business landscape and showcase companies making an impact both locally and nationally.

John McCabe, chief executive of the North East Chamber of Commerce, added: “Having two of the five national Chamber Business Awards winners come from the North East is a fantastic achievement and a reflection of the strength, innovation and leadership within our regional business community.

“Southern Asset Management and Square One Law are outstanding examples of North East firms making a real impact in their sectors, and we’re proud to see their success recognised on the national stage.”

Both winners will be formally recognised at a London Stock Exchange Market Close event on November 26, where the overall Winner of Winners will also be revealed.
