Bricks laid for brighter futures
A Consett-based school is giving its pupils hands-on skills.
Delta Independent School, which supports young people who struggle in mainstream education, has expanded its curriculum to include brick laying after receiving a donation of bricks from regional builder Amethyst Homes.
The construction course forms part of a wider vocational offer at the school, which also includes hair and beauty, catering, sport science, IT, health and social care and enterprise studies.
Sixteen students, including 15-year-olds Alfie Woodburn and Logan Smith, are currently taking part in the brick laying course.
Alfie said: “I am really enjoying the hands-on experience and being able to be outside whilst learning new skills.”
Ryan Curran, vice principal at Delta Independent School, added: “Thanks to the donation, a group of our year 10 and 11 pupils (aged 15-16) have been able to practice their brick laying skills.
“This additional hands-on experience will go a long way in helping them to successfully complete their entry Level and Levels 1 and 2 qualifications in bricklaying, assessed by Pearson Edexcel.
The school caters for up to 62 pupils aged 13–16, providing a nurturing environment where each learner can develop practical skills alongside traditional GCSE subjects such as English, Maths, Biology, and History.
Amethyst Homes, which has created more than 600 properties across the North East, is actively supporting local communities through initiatives such as apprenticeships and investment in training.
The Consett-based builder is delivering projects across the region, including East Sleekburn, Guide Post and Newcastle, and has maintained a 5-star Home Builders Federation customer satisfaction rating.
Richard Bass, managing director at Amethyst Homes, added: “As a Consett-based business, we are committed to supporting local people and organisations.
“It is widely reported that there is a labour skills shortage in construction.
“By equipping students with practical knowledge and qualifications, we hope to inspire the next generation of builders and tradespeople.
“This partnership aligns perfectly with our commitment to community development and education.”
