Airport’s summer push takes off
An airport is ramping up its promotional efforts as it prepares for its busiest year on record, driven by growing demand for leisure travel and expanded route choices.
Newcastle International Airport has launched its biggest-ever summer marketing campaign ahead of a landmark year that is expected to see passenger numbers reach six million.
The campaign, titled Summer is closer than you think, showcases the airport’s largest summer programme to date across the North East, North Yorkshire and Scotland.
Marking a return to television advertising for the first time in more than a decade, the campaign features adverts on ITV alongside major streaming platforms including Amazon Prime, Netflix, Disney+, Paramount+ and YouTube.
This is supported by out-of-home advertising, digital audio, programmatic display and social media activity, as well as a dedicated trade campaign aimed at supporting regional travel agents.
The campaign highlights both the breadth of destinations available and the ease of travelling through the airport, including fast security processing.
Alice Andreasen, chief corporate affairs officer at Newcastle Airport, which was crowned best in the world at the World Routes Conference, in Bahrain. in 2024, said: “The summer season is always an exciting period for Newcastle Airport, and this year we’re proud to be delivering our biggest programme yet, with more seats on sale than ever before.
“We’ve created the airport’s most ambitious summer marketing campaign to date.
“With a broad mix of audiences across a wide catchment area, we’ve adopted a carefully planned multi‑channel strategy to ensure our message reaches the right people at the right time.
“It has been fantastic to embrace emerging marketing technologies that allow us to intelligently target prospective passengers, while also returning to more traditional channels we haven’t used in over a decade, such as television.
“I’m confident that this blend of traditional and digital marketing will deliver a high‑performing campaign and play a key role in driving passenger growth over the next 12 months.”
This summer, Newcastle Airport will operate more than 300 weekly flights to 37 city-break destinations and up to 290 weekly flights to over 40 beach locations.
New routes to Nice, Porto, Preveza and Palermo are also launching.
Further growth is being driven by airline investment, including easyJet opening a new base at the airport.
To support rising demand, Newcastle Airport is investing nearly £60 million in site upgrades, including a terminal extension and expanded arrivals facilities.
