SGI serves up new padel court plans
A Sheffield-based sports and regeneration site is set to expand its facilities with new courts aimed at supporting the region’s growing demand for accessible sport.
Scarborough Group International (SGI) has submitted plans to develop three padel tennis courts at Steel City Stadium, forming the next stage of its long-term investment into the venue and the wider Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park.
If approved, the courts, which will be built to international standards and integrated alongside the main stadium concourse, giving players access to existing facilities including a café, changing facilities and the site’s flexible workspace community.
The courts are expected to be operational by summer 2026.
Scott McCabe, director at SGI, said: “Submitting this planning application marks another important step in the ongoing evolution of Steel City Stadium.
“We have invested considerably in the stadium over recent years, from delivering the grandstand to opening the new café and coworking lounge, and we are committed to ensuring this becomes a vibrant, inclusive and active place for the whole community.
“Padel is a sport that is growing at remarkable pace across the UK.
“If consent is granted, we stand ready to deliver these courts quickly and bring a much-needed new opportunity for participation, wellbeing and community connection to the Park.”
The proposal follows more than £10 million of investment by SGI into the stadium’s development, alongside a recent £500,000 upgrade introducing a coworking lounge and performance nutrition café.
