Plan for 'world-class' town STEM base moves forward
Plans for a multi-million-pound education hub have moved forward.
Darlington Borough Council’s cabinet has backed a blueprint to create a STEM centre in the town.
Officials say the “groundbreaking” site will “deliver a real difference to education and skills options… and lead to local people securing well-paid specialist roles”.
Set for the town’s Science Park – which already houses Teesside University and business support organisation CPI – they add the base will help school-leavers “access high-value careers in science, technology, engineering and maths”.
Construction is planned to start later this year.
The project was previously backed by a £16 million commitment in Chancellor Rachel Reeves’ Autumn Statement.
Councillor Chris McEwan, Darlington Borough Council’s cabinet member for economy, said: “It’s fantastic to see the town moving closer to securing a local STEM learning facility.
“This project is the latest in several aimed at improving our town and economy.”
The scheme is supported by development partner Cityheart, with further backing from Space Architects, Identity Consult, engineers BGP and TGA, ELG Planning and landscape architect OOBE.
James Litherland, Cityheart development director, said: “This landmark educational facility will stand as a true centre of excellence, shaped in partnership with leading businesses and industry experts.”
David Gartland, Darlington College principal and chief executive, added: “This project is a powerful example of what we can achieve when we work towards a common goal.
“We are creating a world‑class STEM facility that will open doors for our community, connect learners with outstanding employers and lead to highly skilled, well-paid careers.”
