Shiltons’ charity secures FJG support
An East Anglian law firm is supporting the launch of a new charity focused on helping people and families affected by gambling addiction.
Fisher Jones Greenwood (FJG) has become the principal sponsor of Shiltons’ Silverlining, a national charity founded by former England goalkeeper Peter Shilton CBE and his wife Steph.
As part of its backing, the law firm will provide £10,000 worth of pro bono legal support to help the charity establish its long-term support model for those impacted by gambling harm.
Peter Shilton, regarded as one of England’s greatest goalkeepers, earned 125 caps during a career that spanned more than three decades and saw Peter play for Leicester City, Stoke City, Southampton, Derby County, Plymouth Argyle and Nottingham Forest, where he won the league title and back-to-back European Cups.
Behind his football success, however, Shilton has spoken publicly about a gambling addiction that lasted more than 45 years and affected both his personal life and finances.
He said: “Shiltons’ Silverlining means everything to us.
“It comes from our own real understanding of what people go through – not just the individual, but the whole family.
“To have the backing of an organisation like Fisher Jones Greenwood at this early stage gives us real confidence.
“Their support is helping us build something that we hope will stand the test of time and help people for generations.”
FJG’s corporate and commercial team is advising the charity on matters including governance, employment contracts and intellectual property as it develops its support programmes.
Ashton Carter, partner and head of corporate and commercial at FJG, who has worked with the Shiltons for many years, said: “We’re proud to support them at such a pivotal stage.
“Our role is to ensure the charity is built on strong legal foundations – from governance and employment through to protecting the intellectual property behind their innovative support model – so it can grow with confidence and deliver long-term impact.
“Our legal support will help establish a sustainable organisation with the right structures in place to scale, attract funding and deliver measurable outcomes for the people it supports.”
The charity’s approach focuses on providing ongoing support rather than short-term interventions, including lifelong membership through its “Shiltons’ Squad” programme.
Steph added: “We’re incredibly grateful for the support we’ve received from Fisher Jones Greenwood.
“Setting up a charity of this scale requires strong foundations, and their expertise has been invaluable in helping us get this right from the outset.
“We’re building a new model of care, and that means protecting our programmes and ensuring everything is structured properly, so having a trusted legal partner alongside us makes a huge difference.”
Fisher Jones Greenwood operates across the East of England, with offices including Colchester, Chelmsford and Billericay, and regularly supports charities and community organisations across the region.
Doug Field, managing partner at FJG, added: “Shiltons’ Silverlining is addressing an issue that affects thousands of families, often in silence.
“Peter and Steph are bringing that conversation into the open and, importantly, creating a solution.
“We’re delighted to support them, both as a sponsor of the launch and as a long-term legal partner.
“This reflects our wider commitment to responsible business, social value and supporting initiatives that make a meaningful difference in our communities.”
