Brewery taps into continued growth

A Yorkshire brewery is looking ahead to a landmark anniversary after reporting another year of sales growth driven by strong demand for traditional ales and new product launches.

T&R Theakston, the family-controlled brewery based in Masham, increased turnover to £9.2 million in the year to 31 December 2025, up from £8.8 million the previous year.

The company, which will celebrate its bicentenary in 2027, said growing demand for cask ale helped drive performance, with its darker beers, including Old Peculier and Theakston XB, proving particularly popular.

Growth was also supported by rising sales of premium bottled ales and the successful launch of new products, including alcohol-free beer Nowt Peculier 0.0% and Theakston’s Salted Caramel Porter.

Richard Bradbury, managing director of T&R Theakston, said: “We’re pleased to report another year of growth.

“These results highlight that our continued commitment to producing high quality beer, supporting our pub customers and listening to our consumers, is having a positive impact on our business.

“While our pre-tax profit may have decreased, the majority of this is the result of increased packaging taxes.

“It is also reflected in our ongoing work to minimise the cost pressures on our pub customers and their consumers, by ensuring price increases are kept as low as possible so that we all remain profitable and sustainable in this difficult economic environment.”

Despite higher sales, profitability fell during the year as the brewery absorbed around £300,000 in additional packaging taxes while maintaining a cautious approach to pricing in support of pubs and hospitality customers facing rising costs.

Pre-tax profit stood at £76,000, compared with £271,000 in the previous year.

Richard added: “Despite the economic headwinds that have been synonymous with this decade, we retain a positive outlook for the business for both this calendar year and looking forward longer term to our third century of brewing legendary beers.

“Our continued success remains grounded in consistently excellent beer quality and growing revenue through strong brand equity and a broadening of our customer base.

“We look forward to celebrating our bicentenary in 2027 with everyone from our drinkers to suppliers, employees to customers, who have all played a key part in helping T&R Theakston become a 200-year-old, family run, independent brewery.”

Alongside commercial growth, Theakston continued to invest in its brewery, including solar energy technology designed to reduce exposure to rising energy prices.

The brewery has also enjoyed a positive start to 2026, securing new national listings for Nowt Peculier 0.0% in 285 Morrisons stores and expanding distribution through Co-op.

Theakston’s Salted Caramel Porter has also secured listings with Morrisons, Tesco and Co-op.

Further investment has been made in the sales team, with four new appointments announced

The additions bring the total number of jobs created by the brewery since the pandemic to 18 as it continues preparations for its 200th anniversary.
