Brewer Theakston taps into solar shift with funding

A brewer is raising a glass to sustainability after securing funding to boost its renewable credentials.

T&R Theakston has been backed to install more than 200 solar panels at its near 200-year-old base in Masham, near Ripon.

Bosses say the apparatus will generate around 25 per cent of the brewery’s annual energy requirements.

The company was supported by the Government’s Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF) via North Yorkshire Council.

Simon Theakston, T&R Theakston chair, said: “This has enabled us to take a valuable step towards a more sustainable operation.

“From our use of traditional wooden casks for our Old Peculier brand, and all our other casks, which are collected, cleaned and reused every day, to being able to produce our own energy, we are committed to evolving in ways which will make our business and industry more sustainable.” 

Councillor Carl Les, North Yorkshire Council leader and former chair of the county’s UKSPF local partnership group, added: “The programme set out to boost the local economy and add community value for local people.

“And this project perfectly fits the bill.”
