Trailblazer scheme returns to unlock opportunities

A Tees Valley employment programme aimed at helping young people take their first steps into work has reopened for applications following a pilot that attracted more than 1700 participants.

The Youth Guarantee Trailblazer supports 18 to 21-year-olds who are not in education, employment or training across Darlington, Hartlepool, Middlesbrough, Redcar and Cleveland and Stockton-on-Tees.

Led by Tees Valley Combined Authority and delivered by Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council alongside local authorities, the Government-funded programme is now entering its second year.

Every participant is guaranteed a one-to-one meeting with a dedicated local key worker to identify the support they need.

Help can range from careers guidance and connections to jobs, education and training to CV preparation, interview skills and support overcoming financial barriers.

Eligible participants can also access paid work placements lasting up to five months, providing practical experience and a pathway towards longer-term employment.

For employers, wages are fully subsidised for placements of up to 25 hours per week, while training grants may also be available.

Businesses receive help matching suitable candidates to vacancies, alongside ongoing support from key workers throughout placements.

The programme has already helped young people secure opportunities with Tees Valley employers including Axiom Events in Middlesbrough, Hightech in Darlington and Alice House Hospice in Hartlepool.

Officials hope its second year will build on that progress by connecting more young people with employers while helping regional businesses develop their future workforce.

Tees Valley mayor Ben Houchen said: “The first year of the programme showed what can be achieved when we back our young people with the right support at the right time. 

“We have huge projects delivering jobs now and we want all our young people to access these opportunities.

“We’ve already seen so many find opportunities with businesses across Teesside, Darlington and Hartlepool, gaining the skills, confidence and experience needed to succeed.

“That’s why we're delighted to open applications again and help even more young people access the support, training and work opportunities available through the programme.”

Councillor Lisa Evans, Tees Valley Combined Authority cabinet member for employment and skills, added: “The success of the first year has highlighted the difference this programme can make. 

“Young people who may have faced barriers to employment have been supported into training, work placements and lasting opportunities, while employers have been able to access enthusiastic local talent.

“The Youth Guarantee Trailblazer is about ensuring every young person has somewhere to turn for advice, guidance and practical support. 

“Whether it’s help building confidence, finding training or securing valuable workplace experience, we're committed to making sure young people across Tees Valley can access the opportunities they deserve. 

“I’d encourage both young people and employers to get involved.”
