Square One Law expands Leeds team

Commercial law firm Square One Law has announced a series of appointments and promotions following its move to a larger office in Leeds.

Jill Anderson has joined as senior associate and Jane Johnston as associate, while Jonathan Morris is due to arrive from Shoosmiths later this month as a property associate.

The firm has also promoted Richard Barrett to partner. 

He joined Square One Law as a property associate in 2021 and has progressed through a series of senior roles with the business.

Richard said: “I’m delighted to become a partner here at Square One Law. 

“I’ve had the opportunity to develop my career while playing a part in growing our presence in Yorkshire, so taking this next step feels particularly significant.

“We’ve built a really strong team and there’s a lot more we want to achieve. 

“I’m looking forward to helping drive that next stage of growth, strengthening the relationships we already have and introducing more businesses across the region to the way we do things at Square One Law.”

Meanwhile, Ben Powell has begun a training contract with the property team after previously working as a paralegal at the firm.

Dylan Hooper has also qualified as a commercial property solicitor, becoming the first trainee to qualify through Square One Law’s Leeds office. 

He joined as a paralegal in 2023 before beginning his training contract the following year.

The team expansion follows Square One Law’s relocation in July to a new 3000sq ft Grade A office at 7 Park Row.

The larger base is supporting the firm’s continued investment in its Yorkshire operation, with the latest hires and internal progression adding further capacity as it targets its next phase of growth.

Matthew Thompson, commercial property partner and head of the Leeds team at Square One Law, added: “We first opened our Leeds office during the Covid pandemic in 2020 with just two members of staff, so it’s fantastic to look at how far we’ve come in six years. 

“We’ve built a brilliant team here in Yorkshire and our move to a new, larger office in the heart of Leeds is a real reflection of that growth.

“We’re continuing to invest in the team, both through recent promotions and new hires, and the new office gives us the space we need to keep growing while continuing to deliver the high-quality, client-focused service we’ve built our reputation on.

“It’s also important to us that Square One Law is a place where people can build their careers, develop and progress, and the promotions we’ve made within the Leeds team are a great example of that.
