Law firm expands with costs company agreement
A legal firm has expanded with a takeover.
Switalskis has bought Calculus Legal Costs Holdings.
The company says the move for the costs services provider creates “a solid foundation” for future growth.
Under the terms of the deal, Southport-founded Calculus will operate under its existing name as a separate legal entity, with founder John Hayes remaining a director.
The agreement builds on an existing relationship between the companies, with Switalskis having used Calculus’ services – which include cost budget preparation and bills of costs drafting – for nearly a decade.
John Durkan, chief executive at Switalskis, whose office network includes sites in Bradford, Huddersfield, Knaresborough, Leeds, London, Sheffield and York, said: “This is an important acquisition.
“It brings additional highly engaged and respected specialists, skills and knowledge into our group, and many further advantages too.
“It gives Calculus access to additional resources and expertise, particularly across HR and IT, and there is also a strong cultural fit between our businesses.”
John Hayes reiterated the growth potential afforded by the move, adding it was also partly influenced by the 2024 Southport terror attack.
He added: “The traumatic experience in Southport made me take stock and think about what I wanted for the next stage of my life and for the business.
“That did not change how I felt about Calculus or the success our team has achieved, but it did make me think about what is important and how I wanted to see the business continue to thrive.
“Switalskis was a natural choice; it has committed to the longevity of the Southport office, and I will remain closely involved in the business.”
Switalskis, which earlier this year secured naming rights sponsorship of Grimsby Town Cricket Club’s ground, has further offices in Barnsley, Doncaster, Grimsby, Pontefract and Wakefield.
