My Delhi crowned Champion of Champions
A North East Indian restaurant is celebrating an “enormous honour” after being named the best in the country, marking a “very proud moment” for its team.
Newcastle-based My Delhi secured the Champion of Champions title at the 2026 Asian Restaurant and Takeaway Awards (ARTA), having first been named North East Restaurant of the Year.
The annual awards, often described as the ‘Oscars of the curry industry’, attracted nominations for more than 1250 businesses nationwide, with regional winners competing for the overall title.
Winners were selected through a judging process incorporating public nominations, Google and Tripadvisor reviews, and food hygiene ratings.
Elahi Shah Amin, director of My Delhi, said: “Seven years ago, we had a dream to create something different.
“Never did we imagine we’d be standing here as Champion of Champions.
“It’s an enormous honour and a privilege.
“We’ve built a culture where everyone shares an obsession with delivering the best possible guest experience.
“I’m immensely proud of our incredible team, our business partners and everything we’ve achieved together.
“To bring this recognition home to the North East makes it even more special.”
The double success comes amid a period of expansion for My Delhi, which has opened restaurants in Sunderland and Leicester.
Earlier this year, the business also completed its first acquisition, taking over Birmingham restaurant Itihaas as it continues to grow its presence across the UK.
Further expansion is planned for 2027, including the opening of a flagship My Delhi restaurant in Leeds city centre and the relocation of its Sunderland venue to larger premises.
To celebrate, My Delhi is planning a special Champion of Champions event, inviting customers and supporters to share in its success, with further details to be announced.
Head chef Gaurav Dayal added: “I grew up in Delhi, and our menu is a reflection of the food, places and experiences that shaped me.
“It’s incredibly personal to be able to share that with our guests.
“Our kitchen teams put their heart into what they do, constantly challenging themselves and refining every detail.
“To see their dedication recognised on a national stage is a very proud moment.”
