90% of graffiti blasted with eco-van

A state-of-the-art graffiti action van is cleaning up in County Durham. 90 per cent of long-term graffiti in District of Easington has now been removed, and all newly reported graffiti is being cleaned within five days.The District of Easington Council and Easington Colliery and Horden Pathfinder joined forces to buy the £40,000 van, that comes equipped with high pressure pumps that blast water at up to 100 degrees Celsius at graffiti daubed walls and signs. The high temperature means no chemicals are needed on recently applied paint so providing an environmentally friendly option.Ian Hoult, Environmental Services Manager, said: “Since acquiring the action van there has been a marked improvement in the amount of graffiti in the district. “We also passing pictures of the tags onto the police for them to investigate serial taggers and would therefore also ask members of the public to report graffiti or information on known offenders to street wardens or the police.”
