New award for Millennium Bridge
The Gateshead Millennium Bridge has won yet another major award – almost five years after it opened to the public. The blinking eye bridge over the River Tyne has been awarded the 2005 Outstanding Structure Award by the International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering (IABSE).IABSE originally presented certificates to Gateshead Council, engineers Gifford and Partners and Wilkinson Eyre Architects, and the contractor Volker Stevin at an award ceremony in Lisbon last September, but wanted to visit Gateshead to present a plaque commemorating the award.Councillor Mick Henry, leader of Gateshead Council, says: “It’s no surprise that the Gateshead Millennium Bridge continues to attract admirers from around the world. “In only a few short years, the Gateshead Millennium Bridge has become one of the most recognisable symbols of Tyneside and, as this latest award shows, is known and admired throughout the world. “I am delighted that the bridge has won yet more international recognition. It proves that the world is taking notice of what we are doing in Gateshead and that can only be good news for the borough’s future.“The Gateshead Millennium Bridge opened to the pubic in September 2001 has won 19 major national and international awards since then, including the RIBA Stirling Prize 2002, the Civic Trust Award 2002, and a British Construction Industry Award.
