Businesses support youth enterprise

Youth enterprise is set for a boost as a £500,000 fundraising scheme is launched.

A national enterprise challenge has been set up to raise half a million pounds for The Prince’s Trust.

The ‘Million Makers’ challenge has seen fundraising ideas from a nude calendar and a Santa fun run to a sponsored slim, and more than 50 companies including The Royal Bank of Scotland Group, Axa and Oracle involved in running mini-enterprises to raise the most money for the charity.

The collected funds will help thousands of young people into business on The Prince’s Trust Business Programme.

Martina Milburn, chief executive of The Prince’s Trust, said: “Companies across the UK are still determined to support young entrepreneurs, despite Britain’s economic woes. Nurturing entrepreneurial talent is now more important than ever. We cannot let the Sir Alan Sugars of tomorrow be thwarted by the recession.”

Million Makers 2009 will be launched in June and will see 100 teams from all over the UK competing to raise the most money for the youth charity, enhancing their team-work, leadership and communication skills.

Million Makers is the largest employee fundraising initiative in the history of The Trust. The Business Programme has helped more than 70,000 young people since 1983 and needs £1million every month to continue its vital work.
