Government 'failing small businesses'

Nine out of ten small and medium-sized companies believe that the government is failing to help their business, according to a survey of more than 2,000 entrepreneurs and business owners by cmypitch.com.

Access to cashflow was the most commonly cited issue by SME owners in which they require government help. In this area 77% of respondents called for more funding, 39% for help with Employers’ tax and 31% want assistance with Employment tax.

Not one of the government’s key schemes has come to the attention of more than half of the small business surveyed. The Enterprise Finance Guarantee Scheme has been noted by 43%, just 22% of SME owners were aware of the existence of the Working Capital Scheme and a mere 12% had heard of the Capital for Enterprise Fund.

“If the economy is to be kick-started then only by helping SMEs with cashflow, overdraft facilities and ultimately funding will we see any upturn in market conditions,” said Emmett Kilduf, CEO and founder of cmypitch.com.
