Study examines effect of climate change on economy
A new study will provide “comprehensive evidence” for the North East to usher in future climate policy.
The Economic Implications of Climate Change North East will look at the effects of a “low carbon economy”, and the implications of climate change in the North East.
The North East Climate Change Partnership, ClimateNE, is spearheading the study, aiming to finish in autumn 2009.
Paul Mooney, One North East Chief Economist, said: “Climate change will fundamentally change the way we live and work. Business as usual is not an option.
“By providing a robust evidence base on the implications of climate change for the North East, the study will help shape our response to both the challenges and opportunities facing the region.”
Natural England Director for the North East, Rob Aubrook, said: “As 90% of the North East is rural, Natural England is keen to ensure that this study looks at the implication of climate change for the rural economy, and in particular the important regional industries such as forestry and farming.
“The impacts of climate change are likely to amplified in rural communities because of their very remoteness.
“Ensuring that we have a healthy natural environment in the North East will be essential for the future resilience of our region, helping us adapt to the impacts of climate change.”
