Prestigious event to come to Tyneside
Tyneside will be the destination for an esteemed international assembly for regional academics and business leaders, having fended off fierce competition national and European cities.
The Regional Studies Annual International Conference 2011 will be hosted at Newcastle University in April next year, with over 350 delegates from the UK and overseas destined to flock to the city.
Discussing a series of topics from the challenge of climate change to the impact of the global financial crisis, the conference is a major coup for the region’s tourism and business industry.
Professor Tomaney, director of the Centre of Urban and Regional Development Studies at Newcastle University, said: “It’s a great privilege to host leading thinkers and influencers here in Newcastle where we have built a real pedigree in this academic field.
“We aim to bring some of the world’s leading policy makers [to Newcastle and Gateshead] to share knowledge and best practice and I’m sure they will be inspired by both the conference and place.”
Organisers of the event have said they are excited about an occasion that is hoped will challenge thinking in regional studies around the globe.
Gill Parkington, of the Newcastle and Gateshead Convention Bureau, added: “Newcastle and Gateshead has played host to some major Association based conferences recently showing a real track record and strength in the area.
“We are confident the association will be delighted by the destination.”
