Building the right team
As a new start up we knew our biggest challenge was finding the right team, we wanted people who shared the same vision as we do. We knew we had a big ask but decided to invest the time and effort needed in our search for the right bunch of people.
It was a given we needed great programmers but what was massively apparent to us was that we also had to get people with the right behaviours and attitudes, those who shared the same values we had set out as core to our company.
The first round was informal meetings in cafes this involved a chat, questions and the dreaded 10 pointer test. All three of the management team were present at pretty much all of the interviews, these would be the biggest decisions we would make and we all wanted in. We invited the best back to a second stage gathering, where all candidates came together in a central location (The Town Wall pub, Newcastle), we all got to share ideas and do some team building exercise which followed by a few beers and a bite to eat together.
This process definitely worked for us, after a month of interviewing and meeting lots of great people we have finally found our team.
