Middlesbrough training firm secure £1.2 million contract to deliver young health traineeships

Young people across the North East can be among the first to benefit from a new Government initiative, designed to give them a real chance of employment in the country’s growth industries.

And a leading training organisation in the region will be leading the way in recruiting the next generation of employees in health and social care, after winning a large pot of funding to put the Government’s plan in to action.

Out of £20m committed nationally, MCQ – which operates from Newcastle, Middlesbrough and York – has won £1.2m to deliver the new Traineeship scheme, offering 16 to 23-year-olds the opportunity to work towards a career in the health and social care sector.

An ageing population in the UK means that the need for those qualified in these areas will be even more vital in the coming years, giving young people who chose this career path the potential for long term employment.

The Traineeship initiative offers up to six months’ work preparation training including CV writing and how to act at interviews, along with improving the participants’ skills in English and maths.

At the same time they will also be given a work placement with the promise of a job interview at the end and with the option to go on to an apprenticeship or employment.

“The Traineeship scheme is to plug the gap and help people be more prepared for work,” said Guy Saxton, Quality Improvement Manager at MCQ. “It will really increase the employability of many 16 to 23-year-olds who might feel that, because of a lack of basic skills and qualifications, they have few prospects.

“This scheme gives them a real opportunity to get on the career ladder.”

MCQ work with some of the biggest companies in the care home industry, so young people on their schemes are able to gain valuable works experience. The aim is to recruit around 400 young people into traineeships from around the region, with a range of events planned to highlight what is on offer.

The team from MCQ will be at the Intu Metrocentre on Sat January 11 in the Yellow Lower Mall from 9am-7pm , giving young people interested in pursuing a traineeship the opportunity to find out more.
