Godfrey Syrett completes £350k Newcastle College project

Godfrey Syrett has completed a £350k project at Newcastle College’s newly refurbished, £18m Parsons Building..

The furniture maker, which has manufacturing and distribution premises in Killingworth and Durham, was awarded the project following a tender process in which five other companies pitched for the contract.

The project involved the design, manufacture and installation of a bespoke range of furniture across ten floors of the iconic building, including a range of seating, sofas, desks and tables to provide modern yet functional furnishings in keeping with the style of the new state-of-the-art learning facilities.

The Parsons Building has recently undergone a major redevelopment and is now home to the college’s business, uniformed public services, health and care, and childcare courses. The revamped facilities include learner zones, training rooms, break-out social spaces, science labs, PC suites, a canteen and coffee shops, all of which required furnishing.

Neil Tweddle, managing director at Godfrey Syrett said: “We are proud to have been involved in providing furniture solutions for the new Parsons Building. This project has been a fantastic opportunity for us to showcase what we do best in a landmark building close to our Newcastle headquarters. Our team has worked in close partnership with BAM Construction and the college’s property services team to ensure that all the furniture and finishes complement the style of this modern building and help create real-work environments for its students and staff.”

The delivery and installation of the project was completed in time for the students starting at the campus earlier this month. The top floor houses some of the more aspirational, design-led furniture - the idea being that the students aspire to reach this top level in their final year.

Steve Johnson, general estates manager at NCG said: “We chose to work with Godfrey Syrett because they are a local business, which was important to us, but also because they manufacture the furniture and this meant we dealt directly with the manufacturer and not a middle man.

“From the outset they listened and showed a clear understanding of our needs, and we were able to visit their showroom and sit down with the designers to discuss options in detail. The result is a fantastic range of furniture that provides the perfect finishing touch to the revitalised space.”
