Leading freedom campaigner to speak at university

One of Britain’s leading authorities on freedom will be giving a keynote speech at the University of Hull on Wednesday (March 9).

Shami Chakrabarti, Director of campaign group Liberty, will be speaking on the theme of ‘Human Rights and the Education Space’.

The speech comes at a crucial time, as 15 years after the Human Rights Act came into force, the Government is intent on repealing it.

The event sees the university’s Faculty of Education hosting its fifth ‘Freedom to Learn’ seminar event, which is funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC).

In the lecture, Shami will be asking if people really understand what the Act does – and what people in Britain stand to lose, if the Government do manage to succeed in repealing it.

Liberty, which is also known as the National Council for Civil Liberties, is a leading voice in the movement for fundamental human rights and freedoms in the UK.

Founded in 1934, the organisation champions the values of individual human dignity, equal treatment and fairness as the foundations of a democratic society.

Due to demand the venue has been switched to the Basil Reckitt Lecture Theatre at the university’s main campus.

The seminar, which takes place between 12noon and 5pm, also includes workshops on ‘What is freedom in education’, as well as other events. A closing address will be given by Dr Patrick Yarker on the ‘Learning without Limits’ project.

The event is free, but places are limited.
