Office dress code proves popular amongst millennials

Research reveals 82% of generation ’Y’ actively welcome dress code policies

A study conducted by Leeds-based law firm, Winston Solicitors, has revealed that 82% of young professionals (21-35) agree with, and are happy to adhere to a workplace dress code.

This follows the recent news regarding a company changing its dress code policy to reverse its decision to make high heels compulsory for women following a complaint from a female receptionist.

Of those surveyed, the majority agreed that dress code policies are appropriate in most workplace environments. Over 60% revealed that adhering to their company’s dress code policy made them feel ‘professional’, ‘reputable’ and ‘motivated.’

Despite many aspects of business in today’s society taking a more informal approach, such as Skype meetings, space sharing, hot desking and flexible working hours, this study confirms that there is still a positive role for a workplace dress code policy.

Paul Grindley, Employment Law solicitor at Winston Solicitors said, “these findings are very interesting and reinforce the need for employers to ensure that their dress code policies are both appropriate for the employee and employer.

“As attitudes and society changes, it’s important for employers to adapt and revise their policies based on new and updated employee rights and staff satisfaction to avoid any employee disputes down the line.”
