Meet The Experts and Plan for Old Age
A SPECIAL information day to help people in North Yorkshire understand how best to plan for old age is being held in Thirsk next month (Dec 2016).
The free information day, comprising a drop-in session and two presentations, is being held at Meadowfields Extra Care Housing Scheme, Chapel Street, on Thursday December 1 between 10am and 3.30pm.
Organisers of the event, which will provide information on a wide range of issues including financial planning, legal powers of attorney, choices and options covering care provision and NHS help for those with serious long-term medical conditions, are Harrowells Solicitors, which has an office in Finkle Street, Oxmoor Care Consultancy, Sowerby and York-based financial planners, Ardent.
Speakers will be Harrowells Solicitors chartered legal executive, Robert Dallinson; Ardent director and financial planner, Michael Oglesby and Oxmoor Care Consultancy director, Holly Bainbridge.
The UK has a growing proportion of people approaching retirement and needing care and support as those born in the post-war baby boom in the 1950s and 1960s approach old age.
As part of this, health and care regulator, the Care Quality Commission (CQC) is working to ensure that all care homes comply with Care Act obligations of providing clear information to residents and families about the financial aspects of care, including the availability of NHS continuing care for those with serious long-term medical conditions.
As there is greater longevity, more people are likely to be living with Alzheimer’s disease or dementia and more care homes, hospitals and financial providers expect residents and their families to have lasting powers of attorney in place so families can easily make decisions on what is best for their relative.
Harrowells Solicitors, which offers a wide range of private and commercial legal services, including specialist legal advice relating to care, health and financial issues for older or vulnerable people and their families as well as personal injury and medical negligence support through a specialist division, CNCI, has three offices in York and others in Thirsk, Easingwold and Pocklington.
