Prof leads talks on UK issues

Warwick University’s Fiona Smith, who is one of the UK’s leading authorities for the World Trade Organisation (WTO), will be the keynote speaker at the latest meeting of the International Trade Club.

Fiona will be discussing the WTO issues that confront the UK at this time, the choices that we will have to make, and some of the implications for UK firms.

Other speakers will also include Laurie Thomas, Managing Director of the award-winning Vision Support Services, and Mike Spicer, Director of Research and Economics at the British Chamber of Commerce.

Vision Support Services is a leading supplier of luxury specialist and performance textiles company who won the International Trade Club Awards 2016. Laurie Thomas will discuss their do’s and don’t when trading internationally.

Mike Spicer represents the BCC externally on business policy and matters related to local economic development and will provide an update on the Business Brexit Priorities.

Helen Cowley, Tax Partner at Cassons, will also discuss VAT place of supply rules for services, including digital services, as well as VAT registration requirements in other jurisdictions. She will also look at the difference in VAT treatment between B2B and B2C businesses.

Les Nutter, Managing Partner of Cassons, which sponsors the International Trade Club, said: “The International Trade Club is specifically designed for importers and exporters to develop their knowledge of key issues.

“Whether it’s navigating the legal challenges in each market, finding a local partner or getting frank advice on how to position your product in a country for the first time, the International Trade Club can provide assistance on all aspects of international trade, quickly and reliably.

“We look forward to welcoming our guest speakers and thank them in advance for sharing their knowledge with the delegates.”

The International Trade Club event takes place at the Mercure Dunkenhalgh Hotel in Accrington on Thursday May 11. It is free for members, 48+VAT for non-members, and £174+VAT for service companies.

The event starts at 8am and runs until 10.30am and includes breakfast and an opportunity to network with other like-minded businesses.
