Preferred Homes launches flagship housing scheme

A new affordable housing scheme in Leeds is providing older residents with independent living and on-site support.

Preferred Homes has completed Hunslet Moor House, a 63-apartment Extra Care Housing development on the site of a derelict 1970s shopping precinct.

The energy-efficient apartments, managed by Pinnacle Group and all for affordable rent, feature smart home technology, fully fitted kitchens and private balconies.

More than 30 residents have already moved into the £16.3 million scheme, which includes community spaces, a café and an on-site newsagent designed to “support mental wellbeing and peace of mind”.

Developed in partnership with Leeds City Council, the project helps meet local demand for care-supported housing, easing pressure on traditional care services.

Preferred Homes, backed by Nuveen Real Estate, has eight more developments in the pipeline, with its next site opening in Telford this spring.

Stephen Sorrell, social partnership director at Preferred Homes, said: “It’s a real milestone seeing the Preferred Homes’ vision come to life in Leeds.

“Thanks to our strong partnership with the city council, we’ve been able to realise our shared ambitions for the site and make sure it will be a community asset for years to come.

“We hope to build on this as we deepen our partnership work with councils and replicate the success of Hunslet Moor House across the country.”

Councillor Salma Arif, Leeds City Council’s executive member for adult social care, active lifestyles and culture, added: “It’s great to see this new development begin to welcome its first tenants, ensuring older residents with extra care, support or housing needs can live full and active lives within a safe and healthy environment.”
