Sunderland shines bright for foundation matchday

Landmarks across Sunderland will be illuminated in red and white to mark a football fixture dedicated to a local charity.

Sunderland AFC’s home game against Millwall this Saturday (March 29) will support the Foundation of Light’s Wear One campaign, celebrating the work of the club’s official charity.

The Beacon of Light, the Foundation’s headquarters, will be joined by Fulwell Mill, Hylton Castle, Keel Square, Northern Spire bridge, Penshaw Monument and Seaburn Lighthouse, all lighting up in the club’s colours from Friday (March 28) to highlight the city’s unity in tackling key social challenges.

Seriös Group, the Black Cats’ official partner, has also donated its sleeve sponsorship of this Saturday’s match to the Wear One initiative

The Foundation of Light continues to address pressing issues through its Wear One campaign, including child poverty, with a recent Joseph Rowntree Foundation report revealing that one in three children in Sunderland are living in poverty.

Jamie Wright, managing director of the Foundation of Light, said: “It is brilliant to see the city coming together as a show of support for the Foundation.

“Seeing other landmarks lighting up red and white will demonstrate our togetherness as a city and a commitment across local organisations to tackle Sunderland’s challenges head on.

“Foundation of Light Matchday is a day we all look forward to as an opportunity to showcase our amazing work and raise vital funds.

“However, it is also a time where we reflect on why the work is needed, as many families within our region feel the impact of the cost-of-living crisis.

“We see first-hand the struggles faced by our community, but any donations people can make will help us deliver important services to the city’s most vulnerable.”
