Foundation aims to drive change for North East

A new foundation has been established in the North East, with the aim of unlocking the region’s “enormous potential”.

The Society Matters Foundation, launched on March 24 at St James’ Park, is a purpose-driven organisation born from the success of the This is the North podcast.

Led by Alison Dunn, chief executive of the Society Matters Group, the foundation aims to give the North a stronger voice on national issues and “bring about real change”.

The launch event brought together a stellar line up of inspirational speakers, including North East mayor Kim McGuiness, who addressed pressing regional challenges such as child poverty, transport and her newly announced local plan for growth.

Expert insights were also provided by Professor Greta Defeyter OBE from Northumbria University, independent economic advisor Dr Nicola Headlam, and Alice Wiseman, director of public health for Gateshead and Newcastle, with panel discussions focused on fostering regional growth.

Reflecting on the event, Alison said: “I can’t thank our speakers and attendees enough.

“The Society Matters Foundation strives to bring about real change for our region and the launch event couldn’t have been better.

“The energy and purpose in that room was inspiring and highlighted the common goals and frustrations that so many of us share when working to unlock the enormous potential of our region.

“I left the event feeling even more determined to carry on fighting for the incredible people of the North East, and I look forward to building on those relationships formed at the launch.

“We will be meeting again in the autumn, bringing more speakers and collaborators together, so watch this space.”
