Wingwalkers soar in BBC’s new documentary
A film production company has captured the thrill and danger of an elite aerial stunt team in a new documentary airing on BBC One.
Wander Films, based in Middlesbrough, follows the world’s only formation wingwalking display team as they prepare for their first public show of the season.
The documentary, The Ultimate Wingwalker, follows wingwalker Kirsten and lead pilot Dave, as well as fellow wingwalker Emma and pilot Mike, as they prepare to perform The Heart Break, a challenging and daring manoeuvre that requires absolute precision, strength and skill.
The film also showcases Kirsten’s passion and determination as she pushes the limits of wingwalking, even after a dramatic incident three years ago when she and Dave had to make an emergency sea landing during a live performance.
Filmed across Gloucestershire and Cornwall, the team battles unpredictable weather and limited practice time, racing to perfect their routine.
Viewers are treated to stunning 360° GoPro footage mounted on World War Two biplanes, offering rare, high-speed views of the aerial stunts reaching speeds over 140 mph.
The film also delves into life at the team’s historic First World War airfield base, in Cirencester.
Executive produced by Wander’s co-founders Chloë Clover and Lou Tonner, the documentary marks the company’s second commission for the BBC series Our Lives, following their acclaimed 2024 film on free solo climbers.
As Wander expands into London and gains international recognition, having represented the UK’s creative industries at SXSW, in Austin, The Ultimate Wingwalker reinforces their commitment to innovative storytelling, bridging TV and digital content.
Lou said: “We’re buzzing to bring our second full-length commission to the Our Lives series.
“We wanted this one to match the adrenaline of our last film and when we met Kirsten and the team we knew this was the story to tell.
“Their energy, skill and fearlessness made it a no-brainer.”
Clover added: “This film is full of good vibes, showing a highly skilled team doing something they absolutely love.
“We’re super proud and can’t wait for people to see it.”
The Ultimate Wingwalker airs on BBC One at 7pm this Friday (July 18) and is now available on BBC iPlayer.
