Motor firm drives on with Asian car maker deal
An electric motor and powertrain system maker has secured a fresh deal.
Advanced Electric Machines is working with an Asian car maker.
Bosses at the Washington-based company say the agreement will “develop breakthrough motor technology that could reduce the automotive industry’s dependence on vulnerable supply chains”.
They add the partnership will explore using Advanced Electric Machines’ technology – which replaces traditional copper motor windings with compressed aluminium – in the Asian firm’s vehicles.
The contract follows a recent deal to send the Newcastle University spin-out company’s rare-earth-free motor technology to a global automotive sector supplier.
James Widmer, Advanced Electric Machines’ chief executive, said: “Car manufacturers are actively seeking technologies that reduce their reliance on concentrated supply chains.
“Our aluminium motor technology addresses this challenge while actually improving performance and sustainability.
“This partnership demonstrates that British engineering innovation can provide practical solutions to the automotive industry’s strategic challenges.
“Supply chain resilience and performance excellence can be achieved simultaneously.”
Advanced Electric Machines previously secured £23 million investment it said would help create jobs, drive forward copper-free motor work, accelerate passenger vehicle motor development and boost its global sales footprint.
