Instrument maker in tune for growth with takeover
A musical instrument maker has added timbre to its portfolio with a takeover.
John Packer Musical Instruments has bought Richard Smith Musical Instruments.
The brass and woodwind firm says the deal for the Smith-Watkins trumpet and cornet maker will ensure “beautiful instruments will continue to be handcrafted in the UK”.
Under the terms of the deal, Smith-Watkins instruments – played by British Army, Royal Marines and Royal Air Force bands, and used to herald events such as the Grand National, will continue to be made from its base at Sherriff Hutton, near York.
Rob Hanson, managing director of John Packer Musical Instruments, which operates from a site in Wellington, near Taunton, said: “It’s a huge honour to welcome the Smith-Watkins brand to the family.
“With his groundbreaking acoustic research, Dr Richard Smith was a pioneer, and the result has been outstanding musical instruments which light up concert halls, recording sessions and military parades all over the world.”
Dr Smith added: “Rob’s drive, passion and inimitable business acumen will help ensure the company can thrive and continue to reach new audiences all over the world.”
John Packer Musical Instruments also includes the Michael Rath trombone and Taylor trumpet brands.
